"Every day I wake up and I ask myself, ‘If I were a superhero, what would I do today?’ Most days, that means I frolic around my room in a cape -- but some days, that means I frolic around interesting places.
But beyond that, I’d say I etch out a pretty non-descript existence. Each day, my body lumbers through the mundane choreography of suburban life, encumbered by the security of habit, the safety of ordinary.
My mind, though, wants to live in the recklessness of freedom. Inside, my spirit rejects the notion that I spent billions of years to get here, just to then sit at a desk, working in an office, waiting to retire; that the point of life is to collect the most things or take up the most room; that life has a template.
That’s not what I want my life to be.
I want to stand on the precipice, screaming into the howling, hollow abyss.
I want the Universe to know I exist.
It’s almost like …
The world is a cold winter-day, awash in a hue of blue; and my soul is inside by the fireplace, prodding at yellow embers, yearning for a warm cup of adventure.
So anyway, that’s why I’m going to Kilimanjaro.”
Scott Fix is a full-time Physicist and part-time Photographer. Previously, he’s done cool, awesome science things, like teaching Astronomy to college freshmen; and doing science demos for schools; and characterizing optical detectors at the US Naval Observatory; and reducing Hubble Space Telescope and Multiple Mirror Telescope data to further humanity’s understanding of Active Galactic Nuclei – supermassive black holes that reside at the centers of galaxies! He’s also taken pictures of things! And he’s climbed rocks! Clumb rocks? Clumbed rocks! And he’s hiked up things, and then hiked back down those same things! He also has won both a trophy and a medal for previous endeavors! Truly, a life of note and accomplishment!
