Three years flew by and I’m in my final year of undergrad, thinking what am I doing with the rest of my life when I graduate?” Lets go back in time to high school where weekly routines of schoolwork and extra curricular activities became endless hours of free time in learning how to balance your social life with school. Growing up in a capitalistic country with two accountants as parents puts you on this pedestal on becoming the next CEO of a company or creating the next successful company. (Okay not to that extreme, but you get what I mean). Having this mindset of becoming the owner of a million dollar home on the seaside of my hometown, Miami, I decided to study Business Management.
A year in college and I had the opportunity to volunteer at an orphanage in Haiti. It’s safe to say that this opportunity completely changed my perspective on life and it’s where I realized my love in serving others. I realized that this luxurious lifestyle I had envisioned was not the answer to my happiness. Fast forward to the future and I am now in my final year of University about to graduate with a Business Degree. I kept hearing those daunting words “What companies are you applying for?” Much to everyone’s shock I told them I wanted to work in the non-profit sector, which led me to apply for a Masters Degree in International Development a year later. Spending my last four years in a world filled with business enthusiasts was challenging as my heart was in another place. The decision to go against the capitalistic mindset, my parent’s views, and my colleagues from the University was such a liberating moment. This moment was a moment that completely changed my world. I feel so blessed and privileged for this current opportunity of furthering my knowledge in something I’m whole heartily passionate about, International Development. The energy you receive from helping those in need will forever be my happiness.
After completing my Masters Degree I am planning to apply for fieldwork jobs, as I am a young graduate with limited work experience. My passion for people, learning new cultures, seeing change in the world and learning the In’s and Out’s of Development have led me to pursue my upcoming years on the field. I am hoping that this foundation will lead me to making realistic goals in the future when sitting in a Non-Profits headquarter.
